PARTS - GRIMLOCK

'Me Grimlock no want ham.'

First Appearance:

S.O.S. Dinobots, Season 1

Character Description:

S.O.S. Dinobots was one of the only episodes I had on tape for the longest time (along with Divide and Conquer, Transport to Oblivion, and maybe Fire in the Sky), until Transformers started airing on the Sci-Fi channel back in the early/mid-90s. As such, most of my memories of Grimlock are of a walnut-brained engine of destruction who Optimus Prime stuffed into a rock-sealed closet for being a danger to himself and others... okay, mostly others. Of course, he'd change as the show went on, until becoming a pleasant if slow-witted friend to Spike's son Daniel in the third season. Plus, he created the Technobots. He also lead the Autobots for a while in the comics.

BEAST MODE LASER BREATH

'Surrender yet, toaster head?' 'No understand meaning of 'surrender,' Blaster!' 'Doesn't surprise me.' 'You make fun of Grimlock again?' 'Hey, look over there!' 'You think Grimlock dumb, fall for your trick!'

'Yes and no -- yes, you're dumb. No, it's not a trick.' 'Look at all the commotion back at the crater.' 'Let's call it a truce and investigate.' 'No. Another trick.'

'Look, Grimster -- I'M the trustworthy one. YOU'RE not. Got it?' 'If this were YOUR suggestion, NEITHER of us would believe it.' 'Me know ME wouldn't.' 'Then we agree, right?' 'Okey-dokey, Blaster.'

Episode/Episodes

S.O.S. Dinobots

Part Description

For me, the first ten images of this sequence was always a fun bit of animation to watch. The Dinobots - just presented to the rest of the Autobots by Wheeljack and Ratchet - are ordered to obliterate all these rocks. So they charge up, fire, and kathoom - the rocks are solid gone, daddy-o. The last five images represent Grimlock's laser breath in specific - the first image is probably the coolest Grimlock's noggin was EVER drawn in the series. And he's shooting at Teletran-1 because he had the intelletual capacity of a real Tyrannosaurus rex until later in the episode.

Various times in the Transformers cartoon the Dinobots showed off their ability to shoot things out of their dino-mode mouths, or even their noses. This is one of the first of these examples, and one of the coolest. Grimlock pauses for a moment, then energy pulses in his mouth, then a massive beam shoots out, disintegrating rocks; or in this case destroying Teletran-1. The most interesting thing about this is the way Grimlock's head is drawn. Check it out; he's drawn based on the toy, not based on the incredibly simplified cartoon model. Because of it he looks worlds better in this shot than at any other time in the cartoon. --Jhiaxus.

BEAST MODE OPTIC LASERS

'So let's get this straight... millions of years ago, even before we were stranded on Earth, you and the other Dinobots sneaked into a Decepticon spaceport and stole three battle cruisers. Just on a WHIM, perhaps?' 'Yep. See, we not much care for Prime's leadership, think he a bit soft in the head. You a lot like him, actually.' Grimlock is one of about three Generation 1 characters to have concretely survived into the Beast Wars era. The other two being Ravage - and, apparently, Swoop. Grimlock also has a successor in the Robots In Disguise timeline, although he's done little to distinguish himself beyond having a Randy Savage-esque yell.

Episode/Episodes

S.O.S. Dinobots

Part Description

Not only can Grimlock shoot blasts from his mouth, but from his optical sensors, too. He's still in Rampage mode here, only he's not knocking over buildings and eating people.

BEAST MODE AIR BREATH

Fruitloop Multipuck Forktongue Maxiface Fullstrength Motleypuss Right... Fortress Maximus?

Episode/Episodes

Madman's Paradise

Part Description

In the far-flung future of 2006, Grimlock has apparently mellowed out. He acted as a waiter for diplomatic conferences, for instance - or for the one in this episode, anyway.

The Dinobots all have weird 'breath weapons' in the Transformers cartoon, but the weirdest is Grimlock's ability to clean rooms with his super air-breath. In this episode he and Daniel found an ancient underground room on Cybertron, covered in ancient writings, and ancient dust. Daniel tried to wipe away the dust, but Grimlock just used his breath to blow it all away, almost choking Daniel in the process.

Only almost choking him, though. Oh well, at least he died in time for BotCon 2001. --Jhiaxus.
