GENERICS:
DAN REED'S UK WORK
Prominent Issues:
Dan Reed worked on the UK comics for a long time; from about 115, to the start of the Black and White strips. Reed also did the cover of issue #56 of the Transformers US comic. That makes him the first UK artist to work on the US comic! (Incidentally he also inked some of Jose Delbo's work for Transformers #64.)
#115, Burning Sky, pt 1
Not Reed's best work, but still his first strip work on Transformers UK.
#132, Kup's Story
This is a neat little one part story which showed that Reed is definitely more suited to monsters than Transformers. I don't think it's a coincidence that, after this story, Reed was constantly called upon to draw aliens, monsters and zombies.
#133,
Head Hunt, pt 1
It's really too bad that the second part of this story was done by Geoff Senior, it really makes Reed's work on this strip look terrible by comparison.
#137, Ladies' Night, pt 1
Again, Reed was followed by Geoff Senior, who showed him up in every department.
#148 + 149, Legacy of Unicron, pts 3 + 4
A great story, and Dan really got to strut his stuff here when doing some massive battle scenes.
#164 + 165, City of Fear, pts 1 + 2
In this story, Reed finally gets to draw something he's really good at. Zombies. Go Reed.
#170 + 171, Deadly Games, pts 1 + 2
Probably Reed's best work. At least in terms of stuff relating to the content of THIS site. This strip gave birth to Chameleon, more than that, I don't think need be said.
#182 + 183, Space Pirates, pts 1+ 2
The Quintessons, world-wide disaster, lotsa death. Cool.
#202 + 203, Time Wars, pts 4 + 5
As someone named TOOG pointed out; it's sad that most of the deaths in Time Wars were contained in issues drawn by Dan Reed.
#219 + 220, Survivors, pts 1 + 2
Dan Reed's last work (I believe) on the UK comics. Nice that he gets to go out while drawing some evil demons.
Rant:
It strikes me that Dan Reed is a lot like Andrew Wildman. He's not a terrible artist; in fact he appears to be quite a GOOD artist. It's just that he's NOT very appropriate for Transformers. Reed's work was really textural, but the wrong kind of texture for Transformers. He seemed to be more happy drawing monsters and zombies than he ever was drawing Transformers.
I think he would have been better drawing a horror comic, or maybe Judge Dredd.
Some of the quirks in Reed's art were things like the introduction of energy-flash transformations (rather than mechanical ones) similar to the ones that became almost standard in the Generation 2 comics. He also tended to give bad guys fangs when they were going insanely angry. If you find Wildman's drool, or Delbo's eyeballs annoying, the fangs would probably piss you off even more. They're one of the big reasons I just don't think that Reed was RIGHT for Transformers. I mean, FANGS? Yeesh.
Reed also had a way of making Transformers' limbs all bendy and stretchy. Sorta like Mr. Fantastic from the Fantastic Four... Wait, Mr. Fantastic; Reed Richards. Reed Richards; Dan Reed. Connection? Spooky.

Dan Reed and Generic Transformers:
Everything that is annoying about Dan Reed's other art applies to generics. They're stretchy, they have weird nobbly hands, they look almost organic, not really like ROBOTS... But there's another aspect of Reed's generics that I don't like either. All of Reed's generic Transformers, without exception as far as I can tell, have chin-guards on their helmets.
I know it doesn't sound so bad, but basically it means that all of Reed's generics look like they're about to play Grid Iron. (Y'know, that American football stuff.) On one or two it might look okay, but on every single one? In the words of the bard: "It shits me to tears." (The worst thing about this is that Don Figuerorearo (or however you spell his name) has taken up Dan Reed's leed and started giving all the TFs chin-guards in The War Within.)

If you don't understand my description, just ignore my ranting. Even if you do understand, I advise ignoring the ranting anyway.
